Salary Range: The full pay range for this role is $93,000 to $155,700 annually. The target range for this position is $112,000 to $130,725 annually. We generally base our salary decisions on factors such as internal equity, candidate work and/leadership experience, educational credentials, and in some cases, candidate work location.

 

Scope of Job: The Senior Maintenance Planner is a high-impact role responsible for developing and owning the maintenance planning framework and master data in SAP Plant Maintenance (PM), driving materials/inventory best practices, and shaping long-term maintenance strategies to optimize equipment reliability, availability, and cost performance. This role provides senior-level, cross-functional leadership (Supply Chain, Procurement, Engineering, Reliability, and Site Management) to ensure maintenance planning drives operational excellence. The Senior Maintenance Planner will contribute to oversight of a planning group in the future, mentoring/planning process support, and continuous process improvements. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Maintenance Planning & Optimization:
    • Assist site teams in the management and prioritization of maintenance backlogs; develop forward-looking, multi-week and long-term schedules.
    • Apply principles of criticality and failure mode analysis to prioritize tasks, optimize spares, and improve reliability.
    • Develop and maintain contingency plans for high-risk or complex maintenance activities.
    • Support regional/strategic schedule optimization to align maintenance plans with operational demands and resource constraints.
  • SAP Plant Maintenance Leadership:
    • Own and optimize SAP PM master data: functional locations, equipment, task lists, bills of material (BOMs), measurement points, maintenance plans, and notifications.
    • Ensure high-quality preventive and predictive maintenance strategies are embedded in SAP; develop long-term maintenance plans aligned to reliability goals.
    • Audit SAP data integrity regularly; enforce master data governance, hierarchy accuracy, and BOM completeness.
  • Materials & Inventory Integration:
    • Partner with Supply Chain/Procurement to establish best-in-class inventory management practices: set optimal stock levels, safety stock, reorder points, and critical spare strategies.
    • Oversee SAP setup and maintenance of stock and non-stock materials, ensuring availability to support maintenance execution.
    • Forecast materials and contract services requirements; align long-term procurement strategies with maintenance plans.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Partner with Engineering, Reliability, Supply Chain, and Site Managers to ensure maintenance strategies improve asset performance and reduce lifecycle cost.
    • Lead resolution of significant cross-functional planning issues by interpreting complex information and aligning stakeholders.
    • Provide senior-level recommendations to leadership on maintenance strategies, KPIs, and best practices.
    • Mentor and support other planners or maintenance process support staff.
    • Prepare the foundation for potential supervision of a planning group in the future, including developing consistent standards and practices across sites.
  • Continuous Improvement & Performance Management:
    • Develop, track, and report on key metrics (backlog aging, schedule compliance, plan effectiveness, capacity utilization).
    • Identify and implement process improvements in maintenance planning and SAP usage to drive efficiency and cost optimization.
    • Contribute to standardizing planning processes, documentation, and reporting across the fleet.
  • Work with  IT resources and vendors. Collaborate with IT and external vendors to maintain and enhance SAP functionality, master data libraries, and information delivery/reporting tools.

Supervision of Others:

  • While this role does not include oversight of technician crews or day-to-day scheduling, it does involve leadership at the planning function level.
  • Will supervise or mentor junior planners or maintenance process support staff; oversee quality of planning work across sites.
  • May lead the function in developing and implementing planning team structures, roles, and responsibilities for multiple sites.
  • Coordinate with site leadership but retain ownership of planning deliverables, data integrity, and long-term schedule/ backlog performance.

Working Conditions: 80% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers, phones, and general office equipment. 20% of time is spent outside of the office visiting operating plants, vendors, customers, attending appropriate conferences and required in-person meetings.

Fiscal Responsibilities: The employee must work within the budget constraints as authorized by the Executive Team while successfully following all policies and procedures related to employees’ fiscal responsibilities in performing day-to-day job duties.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or similar technical discipline) or equivalent technical experience. At least 5 - 7 years of experience in plant maintenance, maintenance planning or reliability engineering in an asset-intensive environment, including multi-site or renewable energy operations.
    • Minimum 5 years hands-on experience specifically with SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) module, including master data (equipment, functional locations, BOMs, task lists), maintenance plans, notifications/orders. Strong experience in materials management / inventory control: setting safety stock, lead time management, critical spares, coordinating procurement and supply chain.
    • Demonstrated track record of strategic planning: backlog management, schedule optimization over weeks/months, reliability metrics, continuous improvement.
    • Experience working cross-functionally with Supply Chain / Procurement / Site Management / Engineering at senior or managerial levels.
  • Preferred:
    • CMRP Certification through the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals
    • Advanced degree in Engineering, Maintenance Management, or Asset Management.
    • Prior experience in renewable energy or power generation sector.
    • Experience with SAP S/4HANA, integrations (MM, QM, FI/CO).
    • Experience leading planning teams or process improvement initiatives.
    • Familiarity with industry standards / compliance frameworks such as ISO 55000, OSHA, NFPA, or equivalent regulatory standards.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Deep working knowledge of SAP PM best practices; master data governance; BOM/task list/functional location structuring.
  • Strong inventory/materials management skills; understanding of stock optimization, lead-time, vendor performance, contract services procurement.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to use data to drive decisions; strong with maintenance reliability KPIs, trend-analysis, and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills; ability to align multiple stakeholders, manage expectations, and challenge for optimal outcomes.
  • Project management aptitude; capable of defining scope, timelines, dependencies, deliverables.
  • Strong judgment; ability to work autonomously, with minimal supervision.
  • Change agent mindset; comfortable challenging the status quo and facilitating process standardization and improvement.
  • An understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic concepts, issues and maintenance, and general troubleshooting/repair of lab or manufacturing equipment allowing for more efficient planning.
  • Strong understanding of computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, SAP, Ariba, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of governance/controls/compliance associated with OSHA, NFPA, IEEE, IEC, NERC, and FERC are highly desired.
